The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena welcomed a life sentence and additional 3 years imprisonment handed down to a 42-year-old rapist by the Mogwase Regional Court on Thursday, 8 September 2022.

The sentences emanated from an incident which occurred on Sunday, 17 March 2019.

It was reported then that a taxi that was arranged to fetch a 13-year old and her two friends at a Game Reserve in Mogwase did not to arrive. Thus, the girls decided to walk home.

While walking, they were offered a lift by an unknown motorist.

The girls were alighting after reaching their destination when the driver (accused) hastily drove off with the 13-year-old minor and ultimately raped her in the bushes.

The victim was during the ordeal, stabbed with a broken bottle. She managed to run to the road and got help. The matter was reported to the police in Mogwase for investigation.

The accused was consequently arrested in April 2019 for kidnapping and rape. He was found guilty on Wednesday, 31 August 2022.

Lieutenant General Sello Kwena commended the Investigating Officer, Sergeant Tshepang Phutiyagae from the Rustenburg Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for a job well done. He also thanked prosecution and other role players for their collaborative efforts that resulted in a life term against the perpetrator.
