Five people have been arrested for public violence after five cars were set alight in Sunrise Park near Rustenburg last week, North West police said on Sunday.

Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said the five were arrested on Friday and were expected to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

“They were arrested in connection with incidents in which five vehicles, a municipal bakkie, an ambulance, two bakkies (Isuzu and Toyota) belonging to two different security companies, as well as a Toyota Quantum were burned. The incidents occurred in the evening on Wednesday,” he said.

The vehicles were set alight at a sport ground in Extension 11, Sunrise Park, after being taken individually from the drivers by a group of about 10 people. The motive was unknown at this stage, he said.
