Farm attack, farmer lured out and shot, returns fire - kills attacker, Potchefstroom

A farm attack took place on the night of 21 August 2020, in Potchefstroom, in the North West province of South Africa. A farm worker was overpowered, assaulted and forced to contact the farmer to come down to the ‘kraal’. When the farmer arrived the attacker opened fire on him in his bakkie. He was wounded but returned fire.

The attacker was shot dead and the farmer, Hennie Niemand, who suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach, was evacuated to hospital, was operated on and is on a ventilator. The farmer is in a satisfactory condition.

The farmer, Hennie, had originally sent one of his other workers to the kraal after the call. When this worker arrived the attacker shot the bakkies tyres and held this, the second worker hostage and forced them to again contact the farmer to come to the kraal.

When the farmer arrived and alighted from the bakkie, the attacker shot him at point blank range. The farmer then rolled over and opened fire on the attacker killing him.

It has also been reported that the attacker, who was arrested a few weeks ago for a farm attack nearby, was released on bail a day or two prior to this incident.

There is no other information available at this stage.
