Crimes against women and children is a national priority. Police in Ventersdorp responded with determination to the call when they arrested a suspect for rape.

A 30 year old male allegedly raped a 3 year old child on Wednesday, 1 August 2018. It is alleged that the child was on the street and in the company of the suspect, who is related to her. They met with another female family member whom the child wanted to go with. She allegedly took the child back home. The child allegedly indicated on their way home that she was hurting.

The police were informed of the suspected incident of rape and the child was taken to the local clinic for medical attention where rape was confirmed.

The suspect was traced and arrested the same day. The accused was remanded in custody until Friday, 10 August 2018 upon appearance before the Ventersdorp Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 3 August 2018.

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane condemned the incident and lauded the police for their swift reaction that led to apprehension of the culprit. She urged members of the community to protect those who are vulnerable such as children and elderly persons.
