The murder of Mr Johannes Brits at the Buffelspoort holiday resort near Rustenburg once again shines the spotlight on the high level of lawlessness affecting rural residents of the North West province.
It is tragic that a family had to endure such violence and trauma during their family getaway while in the supposed safety of a well-known holiday resort.
It would be truly lamentable if criminals, who are constantly targeting the agricultural sector, now also started targeting the tourism sector in the province.
This must be nipped in the bud by, among other things, stepping up safety and security measures.
Tourism is one of the biggest job creators in the North West and plays a significant role as part of the backbone of the province’s economy. The industry must be protected.
If nature lovers and other visitors were to start avoiding the province due to safety concerns, it could result in an economic disaster that will be very difficult for the province to recover from.
The prevention of this type of crime must be prioritised and it must be effectively combated with intelligence-driven actions.
The FF Plus will continue to assist communities and support local safety structures in the fight against crime.
