NORTH WEST – An alleged ATM bombing suspect has been arrested in Boitekong after being found in possession of dye-stained banknotes, marking a significant breakthrough in the investigation into recent ATM explosions across the Bojanala Platinum District.

The apprehension follows actionable intelligence received on Thursday, 9 July 2026, regarding individuals attempting to deposit dye-stained currency into various bank accounts within the district. Collaborative investigations with bank officials successfully traced these suspicious deposits to a specific bank account, paving the way for law enforcement intervention.

Acting on this intelligence, the Bojanala Crime Intelligence Unit, in conjunction with the Brits Trio Task Team (TRT), executed a tactical operation on Friday, 17 July 2026. The raid targeted a residence in Seraleng, near Boitekong, where authorities searched the premises and discovered the unaccounted dye-stained banknotes.

A 52-year-old male suspect, identified as a migrant from Lesotho, was arrested at the scene and formally charged with possession of suspected dye-stained banknotes. Investigators also seized clothing from the residence, which will now undergo rigorous forensic examination to establish a direct physical link between the suspect and the ATM bombings in the Bojanala District. Authorities have indicated that the identification of additional suspects connected to the criminal syndicate is expected as the investigation progresses.

The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 20 July 2026 to face the possession charges.
