Wanda Mozokhona Ndela (38) was remanded in custody upon appearance before the Orkney Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 16 November 2022, for robbery with a firearm, attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. He will reappear before the same court on Thursday, 24 November 2022.

The accused’s court appearance stems from his apprehension on Monday, 14 November 2022. It is alleged that Ndela and two accomplices robbed a 36-year-old shop owner.

The victim was walking down the street in Orkney with a bag containing money when approached by armed men.

The latter threatened him with a firearm and robbed him. However, the victim who was armed, exchanged fire with the men and in the process, one of them (men) estimated to be 30-years-old and yet to be identified, died on the scene.

The other man was injured, but fled the scene in a white Nissan NP200 bakkie.

Allegedly, Ndela fled the scene on foot and proceeded to a nearby taxi rank. He was followed by community members, who kept him in sight and informed the police of his whereabouts.

The police reacted immediately after receiving this information and arrested Ndela about an hour after the incident. A bag containing cash was found in his possession.

Police request anyone who may have with information that can assist the police with the investigation to contact the Orkney Detective Branch Commander, Capt Brian Kalela on ‪082 416 2894.

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, thanked members of the community for their assistance which led to the arrest.

He said this incident is a clear and good example of collaborative efforts between the community and the police.
