The Cluster Commander of Klerksdorp, Major General Suzette Pretorius, welcomed sentences handed by Wolmaransstad District Court to five accused for various offences, between Thursday, 20 and Friday, 21 June 2019.

The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) secured five years imprisonment against a 19 year old accused. The accused was sentenced on Thursday, 20 June 2019 for raping a 2 year old baby. It was reported at the time of the incident that the accused raped the baby at his place while the mother was away. The incident was reported to the police who arrested the suspect.

In another one of the cases, the District Court sentenced Naledi Margaret Kgopane (24) on Thursday, 20 June 2019 to 5 years imprisonment for murder of a 31 year old man.

The sentence emanated from an incident in which the accused was arrested on 10 December 2017, after she stabbed her ex-boyfriend at Extention 15, Tswelelang Location. It was reported at the time of the incident that the victim died after the accused stabbed him with a bottle while asleep at his place.

The accused was arrested after the matter was reported to the police. Upon sentencing the accused, the court declared her unfit to possess firearm in terms of Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No. 60 of 2000).

In another separate case, the court sentenced Thabiso Eric Gxotha and Ditebogo Shadrack Pitso, both aged 20 to 5 years imprisonment for burglary that was committed in May 2017. The owner of the house was away when she received a call informing her about a break-in at her place. She discovered upon arrival that her house was broken into and properties worth R15 200 stolen. Consequent to a thorough investigation, the accused were arrested.

In the third case, the court handed down six years imprisonment to Abel Batsile Roberts (23) for attempted murder of his 30 year old ex-girlfriend. It was testified during the court proceedings that the accused went to the victim’s work place on Thursday, 1 November 2018, where he threatened her. The latter tried to run away, but the accused caught and stabbed her multiple times with a knife.
