In Mooifontein, police nabbed five suspects aged between 22 and 27 for illegal possession of firearm and ammunition on Friday, 22 December 2017.
The suspects were arrested during a roadblock conducted in the area as part of Safer Festive Season operations.
It is alleged that the police stopped and searched a vehicle that the suspects were travelling in and discovered the firearm and ammunition. The suspects indicated upon questioning by the police that the firearm belongs to all of them.
They were then arrested and are expected to appear in the Itsoseng Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 27 December 2017.
Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane expressed her appreciation about the arrests. She said further that the police will not hesitate to deal with anyone who fails to comply with the Firearms Control Act, 2000.
