As part of seriously dealing with road traffic violations and other crimes dependent on police action, a total of 394 suspects including 19 for drunken driving, were arrested in the province between Friday, 9 and Sunday, 11 August 2019.

The suspects were arrested during Operation Fiela II conducted in the clusters of Brits, Zeerust and Klerksdorp. Of the 394 suspects, 84 were arrested for drug-related crimes while another 97 individuals were issued with fines for drinking in public. Furthermore, 28 illegal liquor outlets were shut down for operating without license.

In addition, a total of 32 fines were issued to motorists for road traffic related contraventions while nine undocumented persons were taken in for processing in Klerksdorp and Zeerust Clusters.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear in various courts within the province on Monday, 12 August 2019.

As a result, the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane lauded the police and all external role players who took part in the operations. She further warned that lawlessness will not be condoned and that action will be taken against anyone who transgresses the law including those who drink and drive.
