36 suspects arrested in Klerksdorp police operations

Potchefstroom: As part of crime stabilisation and dealing with acts of criminality at identified hotspot areas, various police units such as Tactical Response Team (TRT), Public Order Police (POP) Tracking Team together with Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) Hawks arrested 36 suspects between Saturday, 6 and Tuesday, 23 October 2018 for various offenses in Klerksdorp.

The suspects were arrested at Kanana, Jouberton, Khuma, Klerksdorp, Orkney and Ventersdorp. Out of 36 suspects, four were arrested for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. The other suspects were arrested for offences such as house robbery, robbery, assault with intent to do grievous Bodily Harm (GBH), unlawful possession of gold, possession of suspected stolen goods and illegal mining. A total of 21 suspected undocumented persons were taken in for processing.

During the operations, the police managed to seize items including a total of nine (9) firearms, 228 various assorted rounds of ammunition, assortment of drugs including heroin and rock, illegal mining equipment, gold bearing material and a knife. Preliminary investigation has linked one of the seized firearms to a case of theft committed in Kagiso, Gauteng in December 2017.

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane lauded members for their efforts in the fight against crime that resulted in the arrest of the suspects and seizing of various items including firearms that are used to commit serious and violent crimes. She said that the police will continue to stabilise crime through intensive policing to assert the authority of the State.
