Durban – Nine people were arrested in KwaMashu for allegedly taking the law into their own hands by assaulting a group of robbers, leaving one dead, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Zwane said on September 27 at around 06:00am, Vusumuzi Sikhakhane, 36, and his two friends were accused of breaking into one of the suspect’s homes where they stole a tablet and a cell phone.

“The suspects assaulted three victims along Ntombela road in F section. The victims were taken to hospital where Sikhakhane later succumbed to his injuries.

“The other victims sustained multiples injuries. A murder and assault GBH [grievous bodily harm] was opened by KwaMashu SAPS for investigation.”

Zwane said the arrested suspects, aged between 27 and 40 were expected to appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni congratulated the members for arresting the nine.

“We would like to appeal to the community not to take the law into their own hands but rather report such criminals to the police,” said Ngobeni.
