New Minister of Finance?

Front National

The political corridors, over the last few days, are buzzing about a possible cabinet reshuffle.

A year ago, a cabinet reshuffle made headlines when Des van Rooyen became Finance Minister for three days, causing the Rand to fall by an astronomical 5.4 percent overnight against the dollar. The economic impact of this decision affected South Africa for months afterward.

Now, it seems as though Zuma will once again play with the lion’s tail. Over the past years, it has become clear that Zuma, in typical dictator style will get rid of the intellectuals within his ranks.

Anyone who appears to be a bit smarter becomes a potential opponent. The top brass of the ANC sidelined Trevor Manual, Thabo Mbeki, and Kgalema Motlanthe among others. The only one from within the ANC ranks that has enjoyed some international recognition is Pravin Gordhan, and now he must go.

The proposed cabinet reshuffle is earmarked for Brian Molefe to become the new Finance Minister. Therefore it can be expected that another repeat of the Van Rooyen fiasco will become apparent. Molefe’s CV lists him as the CEO of –

The Airports Company or SA
Transnet
Eskom

And each one tells its own story.

One can only wonder what will become of the RAND.
