New head of the NPA: Can she root out the corruption in her office?

The FF Plus would like to congratulate adv Shamila Batohi on her appointment as the new head of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and would also like to point out that she has a great task ahead of her to restore the credibility of the office.

The FF Plus takes note that she said in her interview that it is important that the public’s faith in the NPA is restored. In order to do that, she will firstly have to get rid of all the corrupt officials in the office.

There are rotten apples that give the numerous heard working prosecutors a bad name.

Secondly, she must prove to the public that she will not be manipulated by the government in power and that she will make decisions without fear and prejudice. The reality is that the NPA has been affected by extensive corruption and manipulation over the last few years and it will not simply disappear overnight.

The fact that President Cyril Ramaphosa allowed the interviewing of the candidates to be a public process already creates a feeling of transparency and it will help to restore the public’s faith both in the NPA office and the appointment.

Adv Batohi is qualified for the position. She was properly prepared for it by serving as the public prosecutor in KwaZulu-Natal and as an advisor to the International Criminal Court (ICC). The FF Plus hopes that she will continually put the interests of the people of South Africa first and the party will not hesitate to reproach her if she does not do so.
