HARARE — Nearly 100,000 Zimbabweans have returned to their home country from South Africa since the end of May, prompting the government to significantly expand its repatriation and reintegration efforts amid escalating anti-immigrant sentiment across the border.

The mass departure accelerated as an unofficial June 30 deadline loomed, issued by the anti-illegal migrant group March and March, which called for undocumented foreigners to self-deport. In response to the growing crisis, Zimbabwean authorities have mobilized resources to manage the steady influx of citizens seeking safety and stability at home.

Harare said that more than 70% of the returnees are women and children. To ensure an orderly and secure process, all individuals are undergoing comprehensive screening and profiling upon crossing the border.

Humanitarian support is also being rapidly deployed. Health officials, working in close collaboration with Doctors Without Borders and other partner organizations, have established critical medical services at the Beitbridge Transit Center to address the immediate health and welfare needs of the arriving families. The government has explicitly stated that its repatriation and reintegration programs will continue to expand as the number of citizens requiring assistance continues to rise.

This recent wave of returns highlights a much larger demographic reality. Officials estimate that approximately 2 million Zimbabweans currently reside in South Africa. Based on current trends and the prevailing climate, government projections indicate that more than half of this population may eventually leave the country and return home.

Additionally, Zimbabwe’s humanitarian response is not limited to its own nationals. The government is also actively assisting Malawian and Zambian citizens who are transiting through Zimbabwe as they navigate this broader regional migration shift.
