A ritual with naked men jumping over a fire may have led to a sangoma’s office being eaten by hungry flames. The building belonging to former mayor Anthony Bam burned down in Butterworth on Friday afternoon.
A security guard who works at a spares shop nearby told Daily Sun: “I noticed the sangoma carrying handfuls of sand into the house.
“I asked him what he was doing. He said nothing but after a few minutes there was smoke inside his room. We tried to stop the fire but it was too late.
“Then the sangoma ran away.” The guard said the fire might have been started by a ritual. Every morning this sangoma starts the day by making smoke in his room.
I used to see naked men who would jump over the smoke with the sangoma.”
