MTB Gunpoint Robbery suspects sentenced to 11 years
MTB Gunpoint Robbery in Somerset West

A few months back many will recall the incident about an off-road cyclist in the Somerset West area who was held up at gunpoint and his bike stolen. The incident was captured on video on the helmet camera of the cyclist and seen by many when shared across the internet and armed with this evidence, the police were quickly able to trace the suspects.

Well some good news as the suspects were recently before the Somerset West Regional Court for sentencing.

The Magistrate had the following to say to the accused:

“Your cowardice act has effects on many who enjoy the sport of cycling, who now have it in their minds that they are easy targets when enjoying their sport. You have thereby infringed on the constitutional right to freedom of movement of many. You need to be removed from society. Society expects it. The court cannot ignore the reasonable expectation of society.”

They were both sentenced to 11 years direct imprisonment for the robbery. The suspect with the gun was given a further 3 years direct imprisonment for possession of a firearm without being licensed.
