The Provincial Commissioner of the police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, has in the strongest possible terms condemned an incident where a woman was severely burnt with hot water at Bushbuckridge on Sunday, 8 June 2020.

Reports indicate that on that fateful day, the woman aged 34, went to the house of Patience Godi, aged 38, to collect her money owed to her by Godi. On her arrival, Godi was not alone but with her 20-year-old daughter, Soppie Lekhuleni.

An argument between the two (victim and Godi) ensued after Godi indicated that she will not pay back the money she owes to the victim. In the midst of the argument, Soppie is alleged to have gone into the house, boiled water and poured it over the victim.

Thereafter, Godi unshamefully took a broom stick and allegedly assaulted the woman, adding more pain to her. This continued until the victim was rescued by other people and was quickly rushed to a nearby clinic where she was immediately transferred to hospital due to her serious injuries.

Police were also notified about the incident where they registered a case of assault with an intent to cause grievous bodily harm against Godi and her daughter. Both suspects were arrested, taken to court at Bushbuckridge on 10 June 2020 and were granted free bail until their next court date on Tuesday, 16 June 2020.

General Zuma indicated that it is very shameful especially when women perpetuate callous acts against each other instead of protecting each other. “Acts of violence has never brought a sound solution. This situation depicts an underlying problem of a culture of violence in our society. People must resolve issues in a civil manner rather than resorting to violence,” said General Zuma.
