Twenty three protesters have appeared at the Masoyi Periodical Court yesterday, 28 March 2018, for public violence that have erupted in the Masoyi area.

Their appearance follows after they were arrested for conducting a service delivery protest that initially began on Monday. It became disorderly when the protest turned violent with several businesses owned by foreign nationals were being looted and the R538 road that leads to Kruger National Park Numbi Gate was closed.

Motorists were unable to use that route with allegations that they first had to remunerate to pass through the alternative routes.

Police together with the Local Municipality’s Law Enforcement Section subdued the protest and removed debris from the road.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma condemned the unruly behaviour by some community members.

“It is of great concern that to this day we still deal with violent protesters in our communities, we understand the need to voice out public concerns but being violent and disrupting the rights of others is a crime that will not go unpunished,” said General Zuma.

The case has been postponed to 29 March 2018 at the Kabokweni Magistrate’s Court for formal bail application.
