Two suspects appear in court for possession of Antiretroviral Drugs

Two suspects, Caleb Bonginkosi Hlatshwayo (33) and Thaphelo Sibusiso Magagula (38) appeared at the Matsulu Magistrate’s Court, for possession of Antiretroviral Drugs (ARV’s) on 29 August 2019.

The arrest came after members of Crime Intelligence and the Tactical Response Team (TRT) received information about two men who were in possession of ARV’s, making their way to Kanyamazane for delivery. The members responded to the information and stopped the vehicle fitting the description given around Matsulu Crossing on 28 August 2019.

They proceeded to search the vehicle and found packets containing suspected stolen ARV drugs, the duo was arrested thereafter.

Hlatshwayo is a former cop who was dismissed in 2018 for corruption and Magagula works as an Administration Clerk at Matsulu Clinic. The total value of the ARV’s is estimated at R34 500-00.

The suspects were granted R1 000 bail each, and will reappear at the same court on 3 October 2019.

Police in Mpumalanga strongly condemn this act and also further warn members of the community not to buy any type of medicinal drugs on the black market. Antiretroviral drugs are administered for free and meant to treat a particular chronic illness. They are not for sale and should not be used for recreational purposes.
