Two convicted murder and robbery fugitives Sibusiso Nicholas Ngcane, 33, and Linda Michael Cele, 31, who escaped from custody on July 18, have been rearrested, Mpumalanga police said on Saturday.

“The duo were busted at their different hideouts in Soshanguve near Tshwane after the police left no stone unturned in following all possible leads,” Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said on Saturday.

Ngcane and Cele escaped while being escorted to a police vehicle after they had been handed a 28 year prison sentence each. They were convicted on two counts of business robbery in Middelburg and another business robbery and a murder at Elukwatini.

First to be arrested, on Wednesday October 12, was Ngcane, followed by Cele on Thursday October 20. They were both arrested in Soshanguve near Pretoria. When Cele was rearrested, he was found in possession of two 9mm pistols with their serial numbers filed off, he said.

Both convicts had already appeared in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on charges of escaping from lawful custody, with Cele facing an additional charges of unlawful possession of firearms. They were scheduled to appear again on a later date.

Police management appreciated the working relationship with the community who came forward and provided information regarding the whereabouts of the fugitives, and also commended the swift response by police to the tip-off, Hlathi said.
