Two suspects, Amos Mthembu (27) and Prince Mngomezulu (35) appeared in court on Monday, in connection with the gruesome farm murder of the Smuts family in Balfour. The suspects are believed to be Mozambican citizens.

The case has been postponed until May 3, to give the accused a chance to consult with their legal representatives and time for the state to conduct further investigations.

Sgt. Gerald Sedibe, a police spokesman, said the bodies of Gert Smuts (78), his wife Paulina (70), their son Louis (47) and daughter Belinda (42) were found on the morning of February 14, 2017, at the Modderbult farm. They were shot dead. All four had gunshot wounds to the head.
