The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has confirmed a violent altercation at the Macadamia Military Base near Komatipoort in the early hours of this morning, resulting in the deaths of two soldiers.
According to preliminary reports, a SANDF member allegedly stabbed two of his colleagues before turning the knife on himself. Rear Admiral Prince Tshabalala, Director of Defence Corporate Communication, provided further details in a press briefing.
Details of the Incident
The incident reportedly occurred inside a bungalow housing multiple soldiers. The assailant, armed with a knife, allegedly threatened others before locking himself inside with two fellow soldiers.
“He pulled a knife and threatened others… most of the members ran away,” said Rear Admiral Tshabalala. “Unfortunately, two members were still inside when he stabbed them—one was slightly injured, and the other was fatally wounded.”
After the attack, fellow soldiers attempted to arrest the suspect, but he fatally stabbed himself in the neck. He was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigation Underway
SANDF has launched an internal investigation, while the South African Police Service (SAPS) will conduct a parallel inquiry to determine the exact cause of the altercation.
“As a standard procedure, we are doing our own investigation, and SAPS is also conducting theirs,” Tshabalala stated.
Psychosocial Support for Affected Soldiers
The military has deployed specialists from the Military Health Services and Chaplain Services to provide psychological support to soldiers who witnessed the incident.
“All affected members—those who were inside the bungalow and those who managed to escape—are receiving psychosocial care,” Tshabalala assured.
Questions Over Mental Health and Deployment Conditions
When pressed on whether the soldiers involved were recently deployed or under mental strain, Tshabalala emphasized that such incidents are rare, stating that SANDF members undergo rigorous mental and physical evaluations before deployment.
“This was an internal deployment under Operation Corona (border patrol), not connected to external missions,” he clarified.
The motive behind the attack remains unknown, with investigators working to piece together the events leading to the tragedy.
SANDF Calls for Calm
The defence force has urged the public and media to avoid speculation, promising transparency as the investigation progresses.
This marks one of the rare but deeply concerning cases of internal violence within SANDF, raising questions about mental health support and conflict resolution among military personnel.
