Barberton, Mpumalanga – Police have confirmed that a third victim has died following a shooting at a popular entertainment venue in Barberton. The incident, which initially claimed two lives, has now escalated tensions in the area, prompting protests from healthcare workers over safety concerns at the local hospital.
Rising Death Toll in Entertainment Venue Shooting
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli confirmed that a third victim succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack. “We are now investigating three counts of murder,” she said, urging the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.
The shooting, which took place at an entertainment spot in Barberton, has left the community on edge as authorities work to track down the perpetrators.
Healthcare Workers Protest Over Safety Fears
Meanwhile, workers affiliated with unions NEHAWU and DENOSA have staged protests at Barberton Hospital, citing unsafe working conditions. The demonstrations were sparked after a group of people stormed the hospital yesterday, demanding treatment for victims of the shooting.
Healthcare staff reported being forced to flee for safety, raising alarms over the lack of security at the facility. Sdumo Masilela, regional secretary of NEHAWU in Mpumalanga, stated that workers would not return until their safety was guaranteed.
“Hospitals have become crime scenes,” Masilela said. “We cannot compromise the safety of our members. If patients come in, they are not safe either.”
Calls for Improved Security
Union leaders accused the hospital’s security company of failing to properly monitor incidents, leaving staff vulnerable. They have called for immediate intervention from government officials to address security shortcomings.
“We have raised these issues before, but no action has been taken,” Masilela added. “Until safety is improved, workers will not resume their duties.”
The protest has disrupted hospital operations, leaving patients in limbo as negotiations between unions, police, and health officials continue.
Ongoing Investigation
Police remain on the ground investigating the shooting, while community members are urged to report any suspicious activity via the Crime Stop number (08600 10111) or the MySAPS app.
As tensions rise, both the shooting and the hospital protest highlight growing concerns over crime and safety in Barberton. Authorities face mounting pressure to restore order and ensure the protection of both healthcare workers and the public.
