MPUMALANGA – A 42-year-old suspect was arrested in Marite, Calcutta, on Wednesday evening following the recovery of unlicensed firearms believed to have been used in serious violent crimes. This suspect arrest and firearm recovery represent a significant development in law enforcement’s ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks in the region.
Acting on intelligence regarding an individual in possession of unlicensed weapons and ammunition, a coordinated police deployment was initiated. The operation involved multiple specialized units, including Crime Intelligence, Crime Detection, the Tactical Response Team, the K9 Unit, Public Order Policing, and additional supporting units.
Upon operationalising the intelligence, members of the Tactical Response Team penetrated the targeted residence, where they encountered a male and a female. A subsequent search of the premises yielded two firearms: an automatic rifle and a pistol, both with their serial numbers deliberately filed off, alongside live rifle ammunition. The male suspect, identified as the homeowner, was taken into custody and formally charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, commended the multi-unit teamwork that led to the operation’s success.
“The recovery of these firearms and the arrest of the suspect is a significant breakthrough in our fight against violent crime in Calcutta and surrounding areas,” Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi stated. “These weapons, with filed-off serial numbers, are often used to terrorise communities. We will ensure that ballistic tests are conducted urgently so that we can link them to any outstanding cases. Our message to criminals is clear – we will find you and you will face the full might of the law.”
The recovered weapons will undergo urgent ballistic testing to determine their involvement in previous offenses, while the suspect will be profiled to assess potential links to other criminal activities.
In a related development on the same night, police opened a murder investigation after a man was discovered with fatal gunshot wounds inside a vehicle in Marite.
The arrested suspect is scheduled to appear before the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 24 July 2026, to face the charges.
