Two suspects aged 31 and 68 were arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen property, in Piet Retief on 4 August 2022.

According to the information, members of the police from Piet Retief were conducting a road block on N2 Road at Wagendrift turn off, around 06:00 when they stopped a white Nissan bakkie which was loaded with cattle (four cows).

Police then requested for the necessary documents about the cattle as well as that for the vehicle, which they failed to produce. They were immediately arrested on charges of being in possession of suspected stolen livestock.

The two are expected to appear in the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court on 5 August 2022 facing the said charges.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela has welcomed the arrest of the suspects.

“The issue of stock theft has been a thorn in the flesh for us and for many of our residents who rely on their livestock to sustain themselves during these tough economic situations. Police have heard the outcry of our citizens and were are working hard on the path to mitigate this challenge. We believe that this arrest will somehow assist in solving other outstanding cases that we are busy investigating as we believe that the suspects may possibly be linked to other similar crimes previously committed somewhere else” said the General.
