'Steve Tshwete municipal workers' illegal strike: Residents, business owners are the real victims

The FF Plus strongly condemns the ongoing illegal strike by municipal workers in the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality (Hendrina, Middelburg, Pullens Hope, Rietkuil) due to their dissatisfaction with the report that some services, like garbage disposal, have been outsourced.

Decisive action must be taken against these Steve Tshwete who are holding the entire community hostage.

The workers have been on strike since 20 September and the situation has kept escalating as on 28 September 2021, other groups of people, including political party supporters, gathered in front of the civic centre in Middelburg demanding that the Mayor, Diohaka Motsepe, must dismiss the municipal manager, Bheki Kenisa.

The Municipality has suspended all services at the civic centre until 1 October.

Residents and local business owners are the real victims of the dispute between the Municipality and its striking workers.

To make matters worse, a large part of Middelburg was left without water this week seeing as the striking workers are refusing to repair a large water supply line, on the corner of Koraan and Maroela Street, that burst.

The FF Plus demands that disciplinary steps must be taken against these striking workers before service delivery and the upkeep of critical infrastructure collapse completely.

Taxpayers cannot keep paying the salaries of an inflated and disloyal workforce for services that are simply not provided.

In the upcoming local government elections, voters must make use of the opportunity that they have to stand up with the FF Plus and save the Municipality from the incompetent ANC. The decline must be brought to an end.
