Sixty year old remanded for rape

A 60 year old man was remanded in custody by the Leslie Magistrate’s Court today, for allegedly raping a 19 year old woman in September this year, 2018.

According to information at police disposal, the suspect allegedly raped the victim at his house in Lebogang near Leslie, on 30 September 2018. The sequence of events suggests that the victim had attended a funeral with the suspect and his family when they all proceeded to the suspect’s house afterwards.

A few moments later, the suspect’s wife as well as other family members left the house leaving the victim alone with the suspect. The suspect allegedly proceeded to his bedroom and called the victim to follow him where he then raped her.

The matter was reported to the police and the suspect was then arrested yesterday, 7 October 2018. The suspect was remanded in custody for verification of information and will appear at the Evander District Court tomorrow, 9 October 2018, pending bail application.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma welcomed the arrest and said elderly people are expected to take care of members of society.
