A 31-year-old man, Regiment Maluleke has been sentenced to a life term imprisonment for raping an 82-year-old woman. The hefty sentence was handed down on Tuesday, 21 July 2020, by the Mhala Regional Court.

The court heard how, in 2017, Maluleke, who was armed with a knife, attacked the elderly woman in two separate occasions where he broke into her house in Newton Trust (Mazembeni village) near Hazyview whilst she was asleep, and in both occasions severely assaulted and raped her.

The victim did not report the case in the first instance, however after the second time, she bravely alerted her neighbours.

The matter was then reported to the police who opened two cases of rape. The members managed to trace Maluleke and he was arrested. On 12 February 2020, Maluleke was convicted of his crimes hence his sentencing.

The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name will be entered into the register of sexual offenders.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, has indicated that the sentence will undoubtedly serve as a deterrent to other criminals. “We are delighted that another rapist has been removed from the streets,” said General Zuma.
