The Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma welcomed the life sentences imposed by the Circuit of the North Gauteng and Pretoria High Courts, sitting at Nelspruit and Graskop respectively.

These high courts meted lengthy sentences to two accused for several offences they committed. The Provincial Commissioner did not spare his elation for the sterling job done by the investigating team of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Nelspruit.

One of the sentences involves Joseph Magagula aged 39, who was handed two life sentences for two rape charges, 15 years imprisonment for robbery as well as three years for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm at the Circuit of the North Gauteng High Court sitting in Nelspruit.

The court heard that in 2013, Magagula grabbed and forcefully raped a 12 year old learner who was on her way to school. In another incident, he held a 42 year old woman at knife point, tied, robbed, assaulted and raped her in the process.

The other accused, Selby Maseko aged 36, was also handed two life sentences on two counts of rape as well as 15 years imprisonment for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm by the Circuit of the Pretoria High Court in Graskop.

Maseko was sentenced after the court heard that in December 2015, he brutally raped and severely assaulted the mother of his child. He further took a soldering machine, switched it on and then engraved people’s names and insults all over her body.

He was busted shortly after the incident hence the sentencing.

“I believe that these sentences will serve as a deterrent to other would be rapists who have no respect for women and children. As police we will do our best to protect these vulnerable group by removing any threat to their lives”, said Lieutenant General Zuma.
