Rape and corruption, father and son remanded in custody, Piet Retief

Bonginkosi Enerst Zwane (44) and his son Thabiso Zwane (22) were remanded in custody by the Piet Retief Magistrate Court on Thursday, 27 July 2023 respectively for corruption and rape.

It is alleged that on 17 July 2023, Mr Bonginkosi Zwane was informed that his son Thabiso Zwane was arrested for rape.

It was further alleged that Mr Zwane approached the investigating officer from Family Violence and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) with gratification of R4000 so that he could destroy the case.

The investigating officer accepted the proposal, and they agreed that the money to the amount of R4500 should be paid on Wednesday, 26 July 2023 as his son’s case was remanded to 27 July 2023.

The matter was reported to the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation based in Secunda.

An undercover operation was organised.

On Wednesday, the father brought the money to pay the investigating officer, and received a copy of the case docket for destruction as agreed.

The suspect was arrested immediately upon receiving the money.

Both accused appeared before the Piet Retief Magistrate court, respectively, and they were remanded in custody.

The case of corruption against the father was remanded to 1 August 2023 for formal bail application and the son to 3 August 2023 also for formal bail application.
