Rand Water reduces water supply to Secunda due to non-payment by Municipality

The reduction in the water supply to Secunda in the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality (Bethal, Charl Cilliers, Embalenhle, Evander, Kinross, Leandra, Secunda, Trichardt) is the direct result of non-payment to Rand Water. Allegedly the adjusted Covid-19 lockdown regulations have contributed to the fact that the Municipality did not pay its account.

Seeing as Secunda was named as one of the potential Covid-19 hot spots, the FF Plus believes that it is of the utmost importance for health protocols to be considered the highest priority. It is the Municipality’s responsibility to supply residents with clean, running water.

The FF Plus is laying the blame for the water problems currently experienced by residents at the door of Rand Water and the Municipality. Clearly, tax-paying residents are once again the victims of maladministration and the unsuccessful negotiations between two institutions.

In an attempt to remedy the situation, the FF Plus worked with residents who do have access to fresh water to supply water for domestic use to people in need. This solution is, however, only temporary and a permanent solution to the problem must be found.

In the FF Plus’s view, it is abundantly clear that the ANC is failing to manage the Govan Mbeki Municipality properly and struggling to meet its obligations. And even though the Municipality was placed under administration, the ANC has thus far not been able to collect the funds needed to pay off its outstanding debt to Rand Water.

Mr Werner Weber, FF Plus Member in the Provincial Legislature, will engage with the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mandla Msibi, and request that he must investigate the matter at once and find a feasible solution as soon as possible.
