Two suspects aged 28 and 45 are due to appear before the White River Magistrates’ court on Monday, 28 February 2022 for contravention of the Second-Hands Goods Act.

The duo was arrested by members of Ekulindeni SAPS following a case of tampering, destroying of essential infrastructure and theft at Msauli Eskom Sub-Station on 21 February 2022, whereby 12 copper bars isolators, about 200 metres of copper protection cables valued at R300 000, 00 were stolen.

Members of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation based in Nelspruit were summoned.

During an interview with the suspects, they confessed in breaking into the Eskom power station. They further agreed to go and point out the suspects whom they sold the items to.

Their alibi was followed and on arrival at the scrapyard metal in White River, the owner was questioned about Eskom cables they bought on the 21 February 2022. The suspects confirmed that they have received the items and they are already sold.

The content of the Second-Hands Goods Act was explained to them that after receiving or buying property from dealers, it must be kept for seven days before they could sell them. They also failed to produce documentation of such disposal which amounts to contravention of the Act.

The suspects were arrested and detained at the police cells pending their court appearance on Monday. The investigation is continuing.
