A 37 year old police Sergeant stationed at Evander found himself in hot water on Friday22 December 201, after a suspect who had been arrested on a warrant of arrest for theft, was apparently released by the Sergeant.
It all spiralled when the suspect was remanded in custody yesterday, 22 December 2017, by the Evander Magistrate’s Court pending her next court appearance on Wednesday, 27 December 2017.
It appears that the Sergeant ignored the court’s instruction and released the suspect on a warning which is an act of gross violation in terms of the law.
As a result, the Sergeant was arrested and is expected to appear before the same Magistrate’s Court soon.
The Provincial Commissioner has cautioned members to always adhere to the prescripts of the law and to be observant lest they are found wanting and will be dealt with harshly by the full might of the law.
An internal investigation against the member is underway.
