Police launched manhunt following cash heist

Police have launched a manhunt following a cash heist which took place yesterday on the Lydenburg and Nelspruit Road near Brondal outside the City (Nelspruit).

It is alleged that a G4S security vehicle was heading towards Nelspruit from Lydenburg direction when it was forced out of the road by two Mercedes Benz sedans, dark blue and silver in colour. The occupants in the Mercedes Benz opened fire to the G4S vehicle until it halted. About ten men armed with rifles, forced the driver and his crew out of the armoured vehicle to the ground and disarmed them. The suspects also stopped motorists who were driving near the scene at gunpoint while other suspects were busy with their evil acts. They then planted explosives at the back of the security vehicle and blasted the safe.

They fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash. Police immediately began with the search for the suspects and found the two suspects’ getaway vehicles abandoned at the Montrose – Sudwala road, just about 10km away from the scene.

In a separate incident, police are also looking for suspects who broke in at one of the banks in Sabie and blasted an Automated Teller Machines (ATM), taking an undisclosed amount of cash after which they fled the scene. The incident occurred in the early hours of this morning around 02:00.

No one has been arrested as yet in both incidents and police are continuing with their investigations. Any person with information is urged to contact Captain Feth Mabilane at 082 448 9480.
