Police in pursuit of suspects following a shooting at a tavern, one victim killed and 15 injured

Police at Kanyamazane are in pursuit of two suspects that were involved in a shooting at a certain tarven in Kanyamazane outside Nelspruit. One male person who is not yet identified was fatally shot meanwhile about 15 other patrons sustained some injuries after being shot and were taken to hospital for medical treatment. There could be more victims as others were rushed for medical treatment soon after the incident. The bizarre incident occurred in the early hours of today, Sunday 17 September 2023 around 00:06.

According to information, two armed men wearing balaclavas stormed into the liquor outlet just after midnight then opened fire indiscriminately. After the shooting, the suspects are said to have fled the scene.

Police as well as Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were summoned to the scene and upon arrival the male victim was unfortunately certified dead. The injured victims are being treated for gunshot wounds.

A case of murder with other counts of attempted murder has been opened. The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage.

A team of investigators has already been assembled under the leadership of the Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela.

No one has been arrested so far and police urge anyone with information that may assist in apprehending the suspects to call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or send information via MySAPSApp. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has strongly condemned the incident. “We are very much concerned about crimes that are being committed at liquor outlets, including crimes that are carried out near these liquor outlets. We trust that our Communities will come on board and share information that will assist in this investigation”.
