The SAPS in Mpumalanga has made a significant breakthrough by the arrest of two male suspects involved in an alleged robbery and kidnapping of a German tourist in Graskop today, Monday 04 November 2024. Thanks to 2024/2025 Safer Festive Season Operation.

Reports indicate that the suspects allegedly attacked a male German tourist shortly after he withdrew cash from an ATM at a certain fuel station in the area. A concerned member of the public promptly alerted the Police about the incident, leading to a swift response by the dedicated law enforcement officers.

The information provided to the SAPS members indicated that the suspects were traveling in a Hyundai SUV. The men and women in Blue that were busy with the Safer Festive Season Operation and swiftly acted on this intelligence, locating and intercepting the vehicle.

The suspects were cornered and apprehended by the astute members in the nearby bushes. Fortunately, the male victim was rescued alive, though with injuries sustained during the ordeal.

The vehicle believed to have been used in the commission of the crime has since been seized and forms a crucial part of the ongoing investigation. The Police are exploring the possibility of additional charges against the suspects, including potential links to other criminal activities involving the same vehicle.

Preliminary investigations revealed so far that the vehicle in question was a rented car.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing, and the SAPS will continue to work diligently to ensure justice is served.

Meanwhile the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has commended the swift and effective actions of the Police officers involved in apprehending the suspects. “The success of the 2024/2025 Safer Festive Season Operation is evident in this operation. We are pleased with the outcome, especially considering a previous tragic incident involving a German tourist that was unfortunately murdered on 04 October 2022. We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The collaboration between the Police and the community is vital in combating crime, as demonstrated in this case,” stated the General.
