MPUMALANGA — The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has successfully secured a provisional R99 million freezing order against a prominent taxi tycoon and several associates allegedly tied to organized criminal activities and extortion.
The legal action was initiated by the NPA’s Asset Forfeiture Unit and granted by the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court in Middelburg. The order was issued in terms of section 26 of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act 121 of 1998 (POCA).
According to an NPA spokesperson, the sweeping restraint order stems from ongoing police investigations into alleged extortion and related offenses connected to the taxi boss and his network.
The spokesperson explained that the R99 million in restrained movable and immovable properties are classified as realisable assets, representing alleged financial benefits derived directly from illegal operations.
The frozen portfolio includes a lavish collection of real estate and high-end automobiles. Restrained properties feature homes in exclusive Centurion golf estates, alongside several other houses and estate properties located across Centurion and Pretoria.
The luxury vehicle fleet subject to the order includes multiple Ferraris, a Porsche, a Lexus, as well as various Mercedes-Benz and BMW vehicles. Furthermore, the defendants are mandated to surrender multiple bank accounts and investments to a curator appointed by the court.
The NPA spokesperson noted that this restraint order directly advances the core objective of POCA, which is to strip individuals of the proceeds and benefits of their crimes.
Highlighting the broader societal impact of these syndicates, the spokesperson warned that organized crime in its various forms poses a severe threat to South African communities and the national economy. If left unchecked, extortion and related criminal activities actively undermine legitimate enterprises, deter investment, and stifle overall economic growth.
The spokesperson concluded by reaffirming the NPA’s dedication to collaborating with law enforcement partners to dismantle these criminal networks and ensure that crime ultimately does not pay.
