Frustrated workers at the Nkomazi Municipality have gathered to protest the non-payment of their full salaries and benefits, demanding that the executive mayor and council address them directly.
The Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (IMATU) and the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) have voiced their members’ grievances, stating that while basic salaries were paid this month, overtime, medical aid, and other benefits remain outstanding.
Tensions High as Police Monitor Protest
The situation turned tense earlier as police were deployed to monitor the protest. Workers and union leaders expressed dissatisfaction with the police presence, arguing that their demonstration was a legitimate fight for their rights.
“Workers are struggling to meet their financial obligations, with some now in negative balances and unable to repay loans,” said a union representative. The leadership has urged calm while awaiting a response from municipal management.
Workers Demand Mayor’s Intervention
IMATU representatives confirmed that workers are demanding accountability from the municipality’s leadership.
“Our members want the executive mayor and council to come down and explain why their full salaries were not paid, especially amid allegations that councilors received all their benefits,” said a union official.
SAMWU’s representative described the situation as “disgusting,” accusing the municipality of maladministration and financial mismanagement.
“Political leadership must intervene and hold those responsible accountable,” he said, emphasizing the need for consequence management.
Threats of Service Disruption
Some workers have suggested shutting down municipal offices and disrupting essential services, including water and waste management. However, union leaders have discouraged such actions, calling instead for constructive engagement.
Municipal management is expected to meet with union leaders to discuss a resolution, but workers remain adamant that they will not back down until their demands are met.
