MPUMALANGA — A 46-year-old Nigerian national has been arrested in Ermelo for commercial sexual exploitation following a targeted law enforcement raid in the town’s Central Business District (CBD). The suspect is scheduled to make his first court appearance at the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court today, facing charges related to the illegal renting of rooms for illicit activities.
The joint operation was executed on October 22, 2026, bringing together a robust coalition of law enforcement agencies. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), specifically the Secunda Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) unit, led the effort alongside the South African Police Service (SAPS) Gert Sibande District Office, local Ermelo SAPS members, and officials from the Department of Home Affairs.
Acting on intelligence, authorities searched the targeted premises in accordance with applicable legal frameworks. During the raid, officers discovered six females and one male on the property. Preliminary checks identified the women as three citizens of Lesotho, two from Eswatini, and one South African national. Authorities confirmed that all the foreign nationals found at the location were in possession of valid passports.
Further on-site inquiries directed investigators to the 46-year-old Nigerian suspect, who was allegedly managing the property. He was found in possession of an expired asylum seeker document. Based on gathered intelligence, the premises were being utilized in direct contravention of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act. Consequently, the suspect was arrested and formally charged with allegedly renting out the rooms to the women for commercial sexual exploitation.
Law enforcement agencies emphasize that the investigation remains active. Detectives are working to uncover the full scope of the alleged criminal enterprise, which includes identifying and prosecuting any other individuals who may have knowingly facilitated, permitted, or financially benefited from the unlawful use of the property.
Brigadier Bruce Davenport, the Acting Provincial Head of the DPCI in Mpumalanga, praised the seamless collaboration among the various stakeholders who participated in the sting. He also issued a stern and unequivocal warning to syndicates and individuals involved in the facilitation of commercial sexual exploitation, signaling that such criminal enterprises will be aggressively dismantled by the authorities.
