Problems with access control at border posts and porous borders in Mpumalanga could undermine the effectiveness of the national coronavirus-related lockdown if the safety and security at borders and border posts do not improve.
The porous borders between Mpumalanga, Mozambique and Swaziland do not only pose a threat to national safety with regard to crime, but also create the risk that there could be an even bigger breakout of the Covid-19 infection after the period of lockdown, which could rapidly spread to the rest of the country.
According to the FF Plus’s knowledge, large numbers of foreign citizens left South Africa illegally when the period of lockdown commenced and the concern is that they may return when it is over.
The FF Plus will engage with the Minister of Home Affairs, Aaron Motsoaledi, and demand that he puts the necessary measures in place before the 21-day period of lockdown comes to an end to stop the influx of illegal immigrants from neighboring countries across our borders.
The FF Plus will keep a close eye on this to ensure that access control at borders is more strictly enforced.
