MPUMALANGA — One of Mpumalanga’s most wanted suspects was fatally wounded during a shootout with police in Mayflower in the early hours of Saturday, 25 July 2026, following a targeted, intelligence-led operation.
Acting on received information regarding the fugitive’s whereabouts, law enforcement officers tracked the suspect to a tavern in Glenmore, located within the Mayflower Policing Precinct. As police entered the yard of the establishment, the suspect immediately opened fire, prompting a fierce exchange of gunfire. During the ensuing shootout, the suspect sustained fatal injuries.
Following the incident, officers recovered a firearm lying next to the deceased suspect. The weapon had its serial numbers deliberately filed off and is believed to be the same gun used to shoot at the responding officers.
The deceased was a prominent figure on the provincial police wanted list, with established links to numerous serious and violent offenses across Mpumalanga. The suspect’s criminal record included connections to multiple cases of murder, attempted murder, and business robbery in and around the province.
Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, released a statement commending the responding officers for their swift and decisive actions.
“We commend our members for their bravery and professionalism in defending themselves and the community when the suspect fired shots at them,” Major General Mkhwanazi stated.
He emphasized that the fatal outcome of the confrontation sends a clear, uncompromising message to other criminals that law enforcement will not hesitate to act decisively when their lives are threatened by armed individuals. The Acting Commissioner reaffirmed the police service’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety of Mpumalanga’s communities and bringing those responsible for violent crimes to justice.
