The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has strongly condemned the fatal shooting of Sergeant Nhlanhla Petros Sigage (41) who has already been identified by his family. The member was shot, allegedly by two male suspects at Kanyamazane outside Nelspruit in the evening of Friday, 15 September 2023 around 18:50.
According to information, on that fateful evening, the Police Sergeant was with other people at a certain business premises in Ward 4 at Kanyamazane. Two men are said to have arrived, fluently speaking in Zulu and they then bought some bottled water. However out of the blue, the two men reportedly drew firearms then blatantly shot at Sergeant Segage at a close range. One of those that were with him is said to have sustained some injuries after being shot also as he was trying to run. There were no reported injuries on the others. Thereafter the two suspects fled the scene in a vehicle which is yet to be determined.
The incident was brought to the attention of the authorities where Police as well as paramedics went to the scene. The lifeless body of the SAPS member was found with multiple gunshot wounds and he was unfortunately certified dead at the scene meanwhile the other man who was injured during the incident was taken to a medical facility for treatment.
A case of murder with an additional charge of attempted murder was opened and investigation immediately began with a launch of manhunt for the suspects. The suspects are still at large.
The SAPS member was reportedly off duty during the time of the incident and he was attached to Visible Policing in Pienaar Police Station. The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage. Circumstances surrounding the said incident will form part of the probe.

An attack to a police officer is an indirect attack to the state. Those responsible will be hunted down and be brought to book. All relevant resources in terms of the 72 hours Activation Plan has been mobilised and a solid investigation team has been established to bring the perpetrators to book. In that team we also have the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) Unit,”
