Standerton, Mpumalanga – Police in Mpumalanga have intensified their search for suspects involved in the brutal killing of 20-year-old Buhlebenkosi Makhanda, whose body was found dumped near a graveyard in Standerton.

Makhanda was reported missing on Saturday evening after leaving home with a male companion. Her lifeless body was discovered the following morning. Authorities believe she was attacked by a group of men who robbed her and her friend before shooting her.

Police Investigation Underway

Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, has assembled a specialized team of detectives to focus on the case. However, no arrests have been made yet.

Community members have raised concerns over police responsiveness, citing a lack of resources. Some residents claim that when they call the local police station, they are often told only one police van is available.

Community Fears and Past Incidents

The area where Makhanda’s body was found, Mahala Park, is described as high-risk, with no electricity or proper lighting, making it a hotspot for crime. A community member revealed that similar violent incidents, including the alleged rape and murder of an elderly woman last year, have occurred in the same area.

Journalists covering the story also reported intimidation while near the crime scene, with four men—one carrying a shovel—approaching them in a threatening manner.

Family Seeks Justice

Makhanda’s family remains distraught, with her father stating they will not accept any narrative until the investigation is complete.

Police urge anyone with information to come forward as the manhunt for the killers continues.
