MPUMALANGA — A 48-year-old Mashishing-area farmer, Andriaan Burger, was remanded in custody after appearing before the Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court on charges stemming from the unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The arrest unfolded on Tuesday, 04 August 2026, during a targeted, intelligence-driven operation executed by members of the Lydenburg K9 Unit alongside the Lydenburg Crime Intelligence Gathering (CIG) Unit. Law enforcement acted on a tip-off indicating that a male farmer in the Klipspruit area of Badfontein was allegedly stockpiling illegal weapons.
Before approaching the property, officers secured a search and seizure warrant from the Mashishing Magistrate’s Court. Upon executing the warrant at the identified premises, authorities uncovered a .22 hunting rifle accompanied by 416 rounds of live ammunition, as well as a .38 Special revolver with 51 rounds of live ammunition.
According to Mpumalanga SAPS spokesperson Captain Mpho Nonyane-Mpe, the suspect was unable to produce valid firearm licenses for either weapon, leading to his immediate arrest on the scene.
During his court appearance on Wednesday, 05 August 2026, Burger was remanded in custody. The magistrate postponed the case to 11 August 2026 to allow for further legal proceedings and bail applications.
