MPUMALANGA — Law enforcement officials in Mpumalanga are hailing a successful early-morning operation after the Middelburg K9 Unit and Anti-Hijacking Team intercepted a suspected stolen vehicle, ultimately leading to the arrest of an armed suspect. The swift police action not only resulted in the seizure of an illegal firearm and recovered property but also triggered an ongoing manhunt for two additional individuals connected to a recent rural burglary.
A Suspicious Traffic Stop
The incident unfolded in the early hours of Thursday, 06 August 2026. At approximately 03:15, officers conducting routine patrol duties along Walter Sisulu Street, heading toward the Kanonkop and Doornkop areas, spotted a white Nissan NP1400 bakkie.
According to the designated police spokesperson, the vehicle, which displayed Mpumalanga registration plates, allegedly ignored a red traffic signal near the intersection of Walter Sisulu and Protea Streets. Furthermore, the heavily loaded cargo in the rear of the bakkie immediately raised the officers’ suspicions, prompting them to initiate a traffic stop to investigate further.
Foot Chase and Canine Apprehension
The vehicle’s occupants, however, had no intention of cooperating with authorities. As soon as the bakkie was brought to a halt, all three individuals inside abandoned the vehicle and scattered on foot into a nearby open field.
Law enforcement noted that one of the fleeing suspects was visibly carrying a firearm. Despite loud and clear verbal commands to drop the weapon, the individual refused to comply. In response, a police K9 unit was rapidly deployed to the scene. The highly trained canine successfully tracked and apprehended the armed individual in the dark. During the physical arrest, the suspect sustained minor injuries to his lower right arm and was subsequently transported to a local medical facility for treatment.
Farm Burglary Connection and Ongoing Manhunt
Following the apprehension, preliminary investigations revealed a likely connection to a rural crime spree. The police spokesperson indicated that both the intercepted Nissan bakkie and the assorted goods packed inside are believed to have been stolen during a burglary at a farm situated along Stoffberg Road.
The property’s owner has been contacted by authorities and requested to formally identify the recovered items. Meanwhile, an intensive search operation remains underway to track down the two remaining accomplices who managed to evade capture.
Upcoming Court Appearance
The captured suspect, identified as a 33-year-old male, is scheduled to make his first appearance before the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on 07 August 2026.
He currently faces formal charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of suspected stolen property. Authorities have cautioned that the docket remains open, and additional charges—specifically relating to burglary and theft—are highly likely to be appended as the investigation into the Stoffberg Road incident deepens.
