The MEC for Education in Mpumalanga, Lindi Masina, is expected to visit the grieving family of Tshepo Tshabalala, a 17-year-old Grade 8 learner from Senzangakhona Secondary School in Nkangala District who was fatally stabbed by a fellow learner on Thursday afternoon.
The incident occurred as Tshabalala was walking home from school. According to eyewitnesses, an altercation that began earlier in the day escalated into violence, resulting in the fatal stabbing. School staff were alerted, and emergency services were called, but Tshabalala was declared dead at the scene.
Police later arrested the alleged attacker, a minor, at his home. The weapon used in the stabbing was reportedly found in the possession of another learner, who was also taken in for questioning. Both were released pending further investigation and consultation with a probation officer, as they are minors.
A Disturbing Pattern of Violence
This tragedy follows another recent stabbing at a school in the same district, where a learner was critically injured but survived. Concerns were highlighted over recurring violent incidents in schools.
“The MEC will meet with the family to offer condolences before engaging with local government officials to address the surge in learner-on-learner violence,” she reported. “Afterwards, she will visit the school to brief educators and the principal on measures to prevent further incidents.”
Authorities have yet to announce a court date for the suspect, pending further legal procedures. Meanwhile, the community remains in shock as education officials grapple with the growing trend of fatal school violence.
