On Thursday, June 22, Dries (70) and Mariaan Schoeman were attacked on their farm Schoongezicht, between Machadodorp and Waterval-Boven.
Three or four suspects overpowered Dries outside the house and tied him to a tree with barbed wire. He was repeatedly hit over his head during the incident. The suspects went into the house and attacked and tied up Mariaan.
Before fleeing the suspects ransacked the house and fled on foot, and it is not known what the suspects stole at this stage, but several cell phones were missing.
Mariaan managed to free herself, and immediately called the community security and police who swiftly responded.
Dries who sustained a fractured skull during the attack was taken to a hospital in Nelspruit by helicopter and remains in a critical condition. Mariaan did not sustain serious injuries during the attack but remains traumatized and is receiving treatment in hospital.
The police are still searching for the suspects, and it is alleged that one of the suspects could be a farm worker.
At this stage, the police are investigating a case of house robbery, and no arrests have been made thus far.
