A 32 year old man was remanded in custody by the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on 25 April 2019, where he appeared for the first time facing murder, Rape and housebreaking charges as well as an additional charge of house robbery which took place on 23 February 2019.

The appearance of the suspect stems from events flowing from an incident wherein a 62 year old woman was found murdered in her flat at Secunda.

The suspect was initially arrested for housebreaking on 11 April 2019, appeared in court on the following day where he was remanded in custody for further investigation and confirmation of his address. While the police went to his place complying with the instruction of the court, they discovered some property of the slain woman and that led police linking him with the rape and murder of the elderly woman.

The suspect was then charged accordingly. During questioning, he told the police that his motive had been to break into the house and steal some property, thinking that there was no one. He was, however, surprised by the presence of the old woman who put a fearless fight against him.

He then confessed to all his crimes including theft of the victim’s vehicle.

He further told the police that after committing the crime, he reportedly went home, mobilised his brother aged 36 and both of them reportedly went to Limpopo Province with a view to sell the vehicle. Police followed the information and traced the vehicle to a certain man in Limpopo.

During the investigation, it was uncovered that the vehicle was left abandoned at some desolate place where it was then recovered.

Both brothers were charged yesterday, the main suspect is facing murder, rape, theft of motor vehicle and house robbery as well as housebreaking while the second was only charged for theft of motor vehicle.

The case was postponed to 6 May 2019, at the same court for both suspects, with the accomplice (brother), being granted a R1 000 bail. The main suspect was remanded in custody pending further investigation.
