Man arrested for the possession of an unlicensed firearm the illegal possession of explosives

A male suspect (41) is expected to appear at the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on Monday 24 March 2025, for possession of unlicensed firearm and for illegal possession of explosives, thanks to Operation Vala Umgodi as it continues to make an impact. The team apprehended the suspect on 22 March 2025, after members conducted a disruptive operation in the Weselton area in Ermelo.

It was during this time when the combat team stopped and searched a male person and found a firearm in his possession.

A search was also conducted at his residential place, whereby 56 blue electrical detonators and 35 red electrical detonators were found.

The suspect was charged for possession of unlicensed firearm as well as for illegal possession of explosives.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi has commended members for the exceptional work done as proliferation of firearms and high scale use of explosives remains a challenge in the province as both are instrumental in possible cash-in-transit robberies and illicit mining incidents.
